If We Were Hippopotamuses...

Catriona Yule

...we'd roll and roll
our leather skin muddy
in the filth of the day.

We'd crunch muesli,
scanning the supplement
while tracing each other's
curves under our pyjamas.

We'd leave bulges of
our soily naked bodies
on clean daisy sheets
we would never wash,

but we are not hippopotamuses
and as we rehearse stories
to the friends in our heads,
clear water trickles around us.
